ShiningLight
A downloadable Hack
ShiningLight is a streamlined hack of ShadowDark that distills survival and exploration into a sleek, modifier-only system and a unified economy. It softens the original game’s punishing lethality just enough to ensure that a single mistake isn't always an immediate death sentence.
Hack Principles
- Four Core Stats: All characters are defined by four statistics. Strength represents physical power and endurance (combining Strength and Constitution); Dexterity focuses on agility and reflexes; Intelligence covers logic and knowledge; and Presence governs willpower, intuition, and social influence (combining Wisdom and Charisma).
- Modifier-Only System: Since the original system uses only the attribute modifier for checks and saving throws, the base score (the 3–18 range) has been removed to simplify management. If a legacy rule or spell refers to a base score, the Referee will decide how to adapt it.
- Unified Economy: To streamline bookkeeping, all prices are converted into a single currency: Coins (C), derived from silver coins. If a price is less than 1 C, the Referee decides if it rounds up to 1 C or is free.
- Encumbrance: Characters have a carrying capacity equal to 10 + Strength. Your first 100 Coins are free; every additional 100 Coins fill 1 slot. Exceeding this limit makes you Encumbered, reducing your speed by half and granting Disadvantage on all Strength and Dexterity checks.
Character Creation
- Class & Ancestry: Choose one Class and one Ancestry.
- Core Stat: Add +1 to your Class’s primary stat.
- Secondary Stats: Assign +1, 0, and -1 to your remaining stats.
- Random Method: Roll 3d6 (one per stat). The highest roll gets +1, the lowest gets -1, and the middle gets 0.
- Hit Points: Your maximum HP is the highest possible roll of your class's hit die plus your Strength.
- Talents: When a talent allows you to add +2 to a stat base, add +1 instead.
Dying, Healing, and Leveling Up
- At 0 HP: You do not die immediately. Roll a die to start a countdown (d4 + Strength in rounds) before you expire.
- Stabilization: An ally can attempt to stabilize you with a Presence check (DC 10) to stop the countdown.
- Leveling Up: If you are stabilized before the countdown ends, the adrenaline of surviving the ShiningLight causes you to Level Up instantly. However, your character is removed from the scene and cannot participate in further activity until the scene ends.
- TPK: If all characters are reduced to 0 HP during the same event, everyone dies.
- Resting: You recover all HP and spells after 8 hours of rest in a safe place.

Looks pretty nice!
Thanks, the idea behind is to organise a series of one shots with rotating (new) players.
